One visa, 29 countries: that's the appeal of the Schengen visa. With a single approval you can wander from Paris to Prague to Rome without applying again at every border. For Pakistani passport holders, though, the path to that visa takes careful planning, because the application is detailed and refusals are common. This guide explains how the Schengen visa works, which country to apply to, what the 2026 fee and requirements look like, and how to build a file that stands up to scrutiny. If you'd like an expert to check your documents before you submit, our visa services team is here to help.
Schengen Visa from Pakistan: What You Need to Know
What Is a Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa is a short-stay permit that lets you travel across the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It's issued for tourism, business trips, family visits and similar short purposes. It doesn't allow you to work or settle, and it doesn't cover long stays, which need a national visa from the specific country.
Which Countries Are in the Schengen Area?
The Schengen Area currently covers 29 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Once you're in, you can move between them without further border checks on your visa.

Which Country Should You Apply To?
The Main Destination Rule
You apply to the embassy of the country where you'll spend the most nights. If your nights are split evenly between two countries, apply to the one you'll enter first. Choosing the wrong embassy is a quick way to have an application returned, so decide this before you book anything.
Popular Destinations for Pakistani Applicants
Germany and Italy are among the most requested destinations from Pakistan, and each has its own document list, booking process and quirks. If one of them is your main stop, start with the dedicated guide for your Germany visa or your Italy visa. Planning a route through several countries? Keep your longest stay as your anchor and build the rest of the itinerary around it.
Schengen Visa Requirements for Pakistani Citizens
Core Documents Checklist
Each embassy adds its own extras, but nearly every tourist application includes the following:
A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure, with two blank pages and issued within the last ten years

Recent passport photos that meet Schengen photo rules
Travel health insurance with at least €30,000 cover, valid across the whole Schengen Area
Return flight reservation and accommodation for your full stay
CNIC copy, plus your NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC) if you're married
Six months of bank statements, an account maintenance letter and tax records
Proof of your job, business or studies, and a cover letter explaining your trip
Previous visas and any refusal letters, if applicable

Our advisors recommend showing a healthy closing balance (PKR 2 million or more) with steady account activity, rather than a last-minute deposit. Embassies don't publish one fixed figure, so what matters is that your funds match the length and cost of your trip.
Quick tip: Officers read consistency first. Names, dates, job titles and travel plans should line up across every document.
Schengen Travel Insurance Requirements
Insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover emergency medical care and repatriation of at least €30,000, apply across all Schengen countries and run for your entire stay. Buying it before you submit avoids a last-minute scramble, and you can arrange Schengen visa travel insurance in a few minutes.

The visa fee is non-refundable, even if the application is refused. Travel insurance costs extra and depends on your plan and trip length.
Schengen Visa Processing Time
How Long Does It Take?
Most decisions arrive within about 15 calendar days of submission. Complex files, extra checks or busy seasons can stretch that to 30 days or more, and in rare cases to 45. Appointment availability is often the bigger bottleneck, especially before summer and the December holidays.
When Should You Apply?
You can apply up to six months before departure, and you shouldn't leave it later than 15 days before you travel. A comfortable plan is to start gathering documents two to three months out and book your appointment as soon as slots open. Avoid buying non-refundable flights until the visa is in your passport.
How to Apply for a Schengen Visa from Pakistan
Step-by-Step Application Process
Choose your main destination. Use the most-nights rule described above.
Gather your documents. Match the checklist to your profile and get insurance in place.
Fill in the application form. Some countries use their own online portal, which produces a reference or barcode to bring along.
Book your appointment. Use the official booking route for your chosen country.
Submit in person. Bring originals and photocopies, give your fingerprints and pay the fees.
Track and collect. Follow your application status and collect your passport once the decision is made.
Appointments and Application Centres in Pakistan
There's no single Schengen booking system. Many countries work through VFS Global or TLScontact centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, while others deal with applicants directly at their embassy or through their own appointed partner. Some embassies run waiting lists because demand is so high. Always confirm the current booking method on the official page of the country you're applying to, and ignore third-party sites that claim to sell guaranteed slots.
Why Pakistani Applicants Get Refused (and How to Avoid It)
The Reality of Refusal Rates
Roughly 46 in every 100 Schengen applications from Pakistan were refused in 2025, which is among the highest rates in the world. That's a sobering number, but most refusals come down to preparation rather than bad luck. A complete, consistent file is your best protection.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Unexplained or last-minute funds: Large sudden deposits raise questions. Show a steady history.
Weak ties to Pakistan: Make your job, business, studies or family commitments clear.
A vague or unrealistic itinerary: Flights, hotel nights and your cover letter should tell the same genuine story.
Incomplete paperwork: Missing insurance, an unsigned form or the wrong photo causes avoidable refusals.
Mismatched details: A different job title on the salary slip and in the cover letter is enough to cause doubt.
How to Strengthen Your File
Keep your story simple: why you're going, how long, who's paying and why you'll return
Use bookings you can actually stand behind, with realistic dates
Add supporting proof of ties, such as an employment contract, business registration or property papers
Attach previous visas and travel history, and explain any past refusal honestly
Note: A refusal stays on your record and the fee isn't returned. It's far cheaper to get the file right once than to reapply.
EES and ETIAS: What Changed in 2026
The Entry/Exit System at the Border
Since April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders. Instead of stamping your passport, border officers record your entry and exit digitally, and first-time travellers have their face and fingerprints captured on arrival. The system counts your days automatically, so the 90/180 rule is easier to enforce. Allow a little extra time at the airport.
Does ETIAS Apply to Pakistani Travellers?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals, such as visitors from countries that don't need a visa for Europe. Pakistani citizens still need a Schengen visa, which you apply for in advance as described above.

It covers all 29 countries in the Schengen Area, within the 90-day limit.
How much is the Schengen visa fee from Pakistan?
It's €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, paid in PKR, plus a separate application centre service fee where one applies.
How long does a Schengen visa take?
Plan for about 15 calendar days, and allow longer during busy seasons or if extra checks are needed.

The country where you'll spend the most nights. If it's an equal split, apply to the one you'll enter first.

Many countries now ask you to fill in an online form first, but you still need to attend in person to submit documents and give your fingerprints. There's no fully remote option for Pakistani applicants yet.
What is the 90/180 rule?
You can stay a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area combined. Overstaying can lead to fines or future bans.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes. You need medical cover of at least €30,000 that's valid in all Schengen countries for your whole stay.
How much bank balance do I need?
There's no single official figure, because it depends on the country, the length of your trip and your profile. We recommend a steady closing balance of PKR 2 million or more, supported by a clear income history.
